Luttrell’s Legislation to Identify Syrian Terrorist Threats Passes Subcommittee Mark-Up
WASHINGTON – Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) recently introduced the Syria Terrorism Threat Assessment Act, requiring the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to evaluate threats posed to the United States by individuals in Syria with ties to Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) or a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organization (STGT). Today, this legislation passed through House Homeland Security Committee’s Counterterrorism and Intelligence Subcommittee mark-up. Congressman Lou Correa (D-CA) co-led efforts to introduce and mark-up the Syria Terrorism Threat Assessment Act.
“The United States cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the growing terrorist threats in Syria. My legislation, the Syria Terrorism Threat Assessment Act, ensures that DHS is actively identifying and assessing the risks posed by individuals with ties to terrorist organizations before they can threaten our homeland,” said Congressman Luttrell. “Passing this legislation through Subcommittee is a critical step toward strengthening our national security.”
"Border security doesn’t begin or end at the border. Across the globe, individuals with ties to terrorist organizations pose threats to our homeland that can't be downplayed," Congressman Correa said. "Our constituents are relying on DHS and its partners to identify these threats and address them long before they pose a tangible threat to the communities we represent. This legislation passing out of Committee today is a positive step towards securing our homeland, and I look forward to seeing this same level of bipartisan support when it reaches the House floor."
